I was born City and City is where I’m from…

Let’s face the facts. I’m a city kid through and through. I love the outdoors, fishing, the smell of manure in the morning (I made that last one up). Just as soon as I think I might have a little cowboy in me I get into a conversation with a dairy farmer or a guy that feeds out cattle for beef, and I realize that you might be able to take the kid out of the city…you know the rest. In fact I’m pretty sure that if you don’t have at least 5 acres and some sort of farm animal on your land, you probably don’t know anything. At least that is the look I usually get when I start asking questions about it. Therefore, I have waged a silent war on city kid prejudice. I vow to read up, listen closely and watch even closer. I will not be shoved aside anymore. Mark my words, I will shock the country world. I even have a NASCAR driver now!

Finally free

gameBig_mafiawarsOk…this is an incredibly lame post, especially for my first in a while. Today I deleted my Mafia Wars account. This shouldn’t be a big deal, but it is. I’ve been convicted to do this for a while, but couldn’t muster the want to. Mafia Wars is a facebook game that gives you your own mafia and jobs to make money. It’s a game that builds and builds as it goes always finding new items and properties and loot. It is really hard to stop checking it. (The more I write, the more lame I feel. I’m sure you concur). Periodically I realize that I am giving my time to things that have no Kingdom value. It’s not bad to do things for leisure, It is bad to choose leisure over quality time activities such as reading, time with family, time away from the computer. I am no longer bound by this time waster, I’m free.

What a statement of something from nothing, trash to treasure. Jesus really does make all things new, because this is the only way I could tolerate peeps.

The garage puzzle

We have a two car garage on our house…that only holds one and a half cars if it is totally empty. I remember the excitement when we were shopping for houses and dreamt of all the things that I was going to do in my new garage. I was going to paint the floor like on the all the car shows that are on Saturday afternoon. So far in two years I have changed the brake pads on my truck and rearranged the junk about 10 ten times. Why 10? That’s about how many new projects I have thought I was going to start at one time or another. After this afternoons rearranging I have decided that The only thing that might get done out here is rearranging. Its like those puzzles where you slide the different pieces around to form a picture or the parking lot game. parking-lot-2

My newest project is a little adventurous for me. A friend of mine told me he was looking to get rid of one of his riding lawn mowers. Do I have enough of a yard to justify a riding lawn mower…who cares, its a riding lawn mower ( as in sitting down to mow). I went over to his place to look at it the other day.photo0135 When we finally got it started (battery), it sounded as if it were going to fly off into the Kansas sunset…fast! I thought this might be a little too much to take on, but for the price he’s asking I’d be crazy not to try. So, sometime this week it will be trailered over to my one and a half car garage and I will be doing my best Cooter impression. Why do I put Kristen through this…it’s because God is preparing her for working with “special people” someday.cooter2

On overload!

The past two weeks have been a wild ride. Between sleeping at the hospital, our prayer pals program at church, and my new found (soon to be former) obsession Mafia Wars, I have hit the wall. I need to back up for a few days and gain a little perspective. In order to do that, there are some things that are going to have to go.

#1   Television- before you gasp in disbelief, TV seems to be one of the things that I gravitate to. Think of all the great brain power that is used up on Sportcenter and John & Kate plus 8. What a shame.

#2   Computer time- While I will still be checking my e-mail and posting on here, I will not be checking my blog roll or my daily round the latest sports news and rumors. I especially will not be checking my facebook or participating in Mafia Wars. How can something so meaningless be so consuming.

In the place of these thing I will be:

#1   Reading- I’m getting way behind on my yet to read stack.

#2   Reading books of the bible- In NT Wrights book, “Following Jesus” he says: I am convinced that using a lectionary– reading the Bible in little snippits–  is a second-order activity; the primary activity ought to be reading the Bible in large chunks, to get it full flavor and thrust. One book a day. It’s easy to read something that is familiar to you or in nice and neatly wrapped up nuggets of knowledge, but you might miss something if your not absorbing the whole story. I’ll give it a shot.

#3   Love on my kids- they need me far more than my TV or computer do. duh!

I’m not telling you all of this so that I will somehow seem wise and grounded, but more so as a confession to how far away from the narrow I seem to wander. The point is, I only have so much room up in the ol’ gray matter, sometimes I need to do a little spring cleaning.

Snow out!?!

Rain outs and Snow outs are always a bittersweet ordeal. On one hand I get to go home from work early, spend time with the family, get some things done around the house. On the other, I don’t get paid if I don’t work, there are far too many things to get done around the house, and, of course, the snow (my ire). Good thing KU plays tonight!

I thought this was a cool website. It tells you how rich you are and where you rank rank among the richest in the world. It was humbling to see that I was in the top 1% and the 53,205,017 richest person in the world! What about the other 99%? I’ll remember how blessed I am next time I’m complaining about how many bills I have and wondering if I’m going to have enough to put in my savings account. Click on the box below to see where you rank!

I’m the 53,205,017 richest person on earth!

three up, three down 2
March 21, 2009, 3:27 PM

It’s been over a week since I posted last. It was a combination of laziness and too many other things on my brain. I think I will start out with my second installment of 3up, 3down to get things going again.

one down- I think I might have a new addiction and I’m pretty sure they don’t have any 12 step programs for this. Mafia wars on facebook. Lets put it this way, I usually only check my facebook once a week,  but in the last two days I’ve checked it probably 10 times. Sign up here!

two down- I havent started running yet. I keep finding a reason to put it off (not hard to do). I have 10 more lbs. to lose and I’m pretty sure it’s not coming off until I hit the pavement.

three down- My March Madness bracket is in shambles. I took a gamble and picked a few upsets, those were all wrong and the upsets that happened, I didn’t pick. Maybe I’ll start over for the sweet 16.

one up- I watched a great movie last night. If you like action and complicated plots that you have to figure out as you go along you might want to watch Eagle Eye. Besides Shia Labeouf on the erie similarities to the alien in Flight of the Navigator, this is one of the best movies I have seen in a while.

two up- God has been very evident lately in confirming the path he has us on. Just when we get discouraged, something, usally small an profound, shows up. Praise God for bieng in the details!

three up- I just finished a great book last week. Look out for Book Report 2 coming soon.
